JOB DESCRIPTION:

We are seeking a skilled SQL Server Developer highly experienced with writing complex transact-sql, designing databases/tables and architecting data layer solutions.  Additionally the candidate must have deep expertise in database performance troubleshooting, SQL Server engine internals/configurations and Azure SQL deployments. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience optimizing database code and configuring SQL Server environments both on-premises and in Azure (Azure SQL Database and SQL Managed Instance).

This role requires a problem-solving mindset, an analytical approach to diagnosing performance bottlenecks, and the ability to learn complex application domains quickly.

Key Responsibilities

SQL Server Performance & Troubleshooting

• Diagnose and optimize T-SQL queries, indexing strategies, execution plans, and memory allocation.
• Identify and resolve deadlocks, blocking, and concurrency issues.
• Use tools like SQL Profiler, Extended Events, Dynamic Management Views (DMVs), and Query Store to analyze performance bottlenecks.
• Implement query tuning, partitioning, and indexing techniques for optimal performance.

SQL Server Internals & Configuration

• Leverage your understanding of SQL Server architecture, storage engine, buffer pool, transaction log, tempdb management, and locking mechanisms to resolve production issues.
• Configure and optimize SQL Server settings (e.g., MAXDOP, Cost Threshold for Parallelism, TempDB allocation).
• Monitor and manage SQL Server replication, mirroring, and high-availability setups.

Azure SQL & Cloud Deployments

• Deploy and manage Azure SQL Database, SQL Managed Instance, and Virtual Machine-based SQL Server.
• Configure firewall rules, networking, and private endpoints in Azure Portal.
• Implement Azure security best practices including TDE, Always Encrypted, and Managed Identities.
• Automate SQL deployments using ARM templates.
• Monitor cloud-based SQL instances using Azure Monitor, Log Analytics, and Performance Insights.

Technical Expertise:

• 5+ years of experience in SQL Server development and administration.
• Strong proficiency in SQL Server 2016/2019/2022 and Azure SQL environments.
• Strong Proficiency in T-SQL, stored procedures, triggers, and query tuning.
• Advanced understanding of query optimization, execution plans, indexing strategies, and statistics.
• Advanced understanding of SQL Server internals, memory management, and troubleshooting tools.
• Expertise in configuring SQL Server settings for performance tuning and optimization.
• Experience with Azure SQL Database, SQL Managed Instance, and IaaS-based SQL Server.
• Experience with PowerShell, T-SQL automation, or Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) for SQL deployments.

Tools & Technologies:

• SQL Server Profiler, Extended Events, Query Store, Dynamic Management Views (DMVs)
• Azure Portal, Azure SQL, SQL Managed Instance, Azure Monitor
• Performance tuning tools like First Responder Kit, sp_WhoIsActive
• PowerShell, Terraform, or ARM Templates for SQL automation
• CI/CD for database deployments using Azure DevOps / GitHub Actions
